Zimmer's Picks (DeadStash)

I am pleased to annouce the first of what I hope to be many contributions to this site. When considering what I thought would make this a successful blog; the first thing that came to mind was Grateful Dead shows. I thought to myself; Who better to share links and knowledge than Zimmer? This cat has by far the most depth in this area of anyone I know and may have ever met. Time after time he has shared with me some of the best Dead music that I have ever heard. Mind blowing/relevant shows that took me to outer space and back.

You can feel his love of the Dead within' seconds of sparking a conversation. As well his ability to tell stories that paint a picture is quite incredible. I consider this cat one of my best friends, and one of the coolest cats I have ever met. I am so pleased that he agreed to help us in our quest to bring great music to you.

Ladies and Gentleman... Zimmer's Pick's (DeadStash):

here's the 1st installment....

As many of you may know, the Grateful Dead will be honored in New York City today, when the Empire State Building will be illuminated in a tie-dye lighting scheme. With that in mind, I thought that it would be appropriate for the first installment of Zim's Picks to highlight a few of the numerous stellar performances the boys put on in the Big Apple. NYC was always a home-away-from-home for the Dead; and when you listen to these shows, you can tell how much fun they are having.

Bill Graham knew how to throw a party. And these shows from May 15, 1970, at the legendary Fillmore East, offer solid proof. Included here are both the Early and Late Shows, which both offer acoustic and electric sets. Pigpen sounds particularly good here, and his organ-playing is spot-on. As an extra bonus, the sets from the New Riders of the Purple Sage (who were on the double-bill) are also included for you aural pleasure.

Now we fast-forward a decade-and-change and move to a slightly larger venue. Originally, as a fan of the 70's Dead, it took me a while to warm up to the sound of the early-80's Dead. I can't believe what I was missing. Give this 1982 show from Madison Square Garden a listen to hear the band in peak-form. The jams are tight and the song-selection is superb.
