Buckethead: Gimmick or Guitar God?

Words & Photos By Nicholas Stock ( phatphlogblog.blogspot.com ) At what point does the gimmick overshadow the performance? The obvious answer is Buckethead. The man is an amazing guitarist but something is not right in this world. The idea a performer who dons a KFC chicken bucket on his head for a concert has always intrigued me, and some of his side projects such as Colonel Claypool’s Bernie Bucket of Brains have been huge successes. However his performance last weekend in Fort Collins simply left me perplexed. From his robotic dancing, to his nunchuck display, to the fact the he performed with an iPod rather than a band all added to my confusion. Going into the show I was ready to be blown away, despite rumblings of disgruntled fans from the previous night’s show at The Gothic. Buckethead had had some sound issues and some missed cues in Denver but I was still trying to be positive for the show in Fort Collins. The first time I was born into the narrow confines of evangelical religion. The second time I was born again, I was a gangly young man born into the big, wide, roiling sea of the infinite universe. And it all happened on a pirate ship and a wacky dance club at Burning Man. In 2002, I was a self-doubting preacher unsure whether to continue a fledgling career calling, when a voluptuous mountain guide neighbor asked if I would join her on a week-long experience at Burning Man. “After the week is over, and you still want to preach. Then great. If not, then you’re welcome!” she piped up. Scott Shrader Photography When asked to write a review of last week's Billy Strings show at Asheville, North Carolina's Salvage Station I almost passed on it. I just wrote a review of his last Asheville show a few months ago and I thought it may be hard to come up with another set of words to describe to the readers exactly what a Billy Strings show is all about. I am sure there are a plethora of other reviews that other people have written focusing on how well he has mastered his instrument. I suppose I could recycle those thoughts and just sit here typing out a few adjectives describing each note Billy and his superb backing band played this past Thursday night, but that wouldn't be fun for me. Additionally I'd imagine a review like that wouldn't keep your attention either. Instead I have decided to focus on a few random parts of the Billy Strings show that seemed interesting to me. One: B

Cage the Elephant, Young the Giant, Bakar & Willow Avalon 8.21.24

Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion  Gilford, NH   Words & photos by Arlene Brown The diverse music of the evening was a very direct correlation to the diverse crowd and their moods for the evening. Cage the Elephant is currently touring with Young the Giant, both of which are known for their high energy filled alt rock vibes. Bakar is known for his unique indie rock solo style and Willow Avalon brings her southern country meets LA charm. The crowd also had very different energy levels for the evening. Self deemed, “Southern Belle, Raising Hell” on her Instagram account, country artist Willow Avalon was first on stage. With her large social media presence, songs “Yodelayheewho,” “Tequila or Whiskey,” and crowd involved “Homewrecker” were big hits. Granted, not many were in the venue yet, but those that were there definitely enjoyed singing and dancing along.  As a few more people trickled in, London native Bakar stood alone on the stage.
