Words By Karen Dugan (Tiny Rager)
I sat down to write this week’s Funk Friday and as always, was flooded with so many collaborations that I wanted to focus on. However, I also wanted to do something a little different than focusing on an individual group. I began making a list of the funkiest songs that I knew and thought, “Hey! Top ten funk songs!” But I then thought what my list of new school funk vs old school funk Top Ten list might look like. So, I made two rules for myself:
1. Write down whatever comes off the top of my head immediately. No researching!
2. Each slot must hold a different artist
This is what I came up with...
Old School Funk:
1. "Theme from Shaft" Issac Haynes
2. "Yes We Can" Pointer Sisters
3. "Play That Funky Music White Boy" Wild Cherry
4. "Give Up The Funk" Parliament Funkadelic
5. "Nasty Girl" Betty Davis
6. "Living For The City" Steve Wonder
7. "Magic Number" Herbie Hancock
8. "Get Down On it" Kool and The Gang
9. "Super Freak" Rick James
10. "Tell Me Something Good" Chaka Khan
New School Funk:
1. "Give It Away Now" Red Hot Chili Peppers
2. "Turn It Out" Soulive
3. "Funk On The Brain" Greyboy Allstars
4. "What You Need" Galactic
5. "King of the Burgs" Lettuce
6. "I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor" Baby Charles
7. "Do Your Thing" Orgone
8. "Baby Bouncer" New Master Sounds
9. "Ho Cake" JJ Grey
10. "Let’s Go Everywhere Man" Martin Medeski and Wood
I am sure that given enough time, my list could be altered over and over again. Picking 10 songs, let alone trying to figure out your top ten favorite funk songs, is quite impossible. I would much rather be given the daunting task of picking my Top one hundred rather than my Top ten. There is such great funk music out there!
So, now it’s your turn! What are your picks? And remember, play by the rules!
