Saturday Dead: The Second Coming of Jerry

Words By J-man

On July 10th, 1986 the beloved Jerry Garcia went into a diabetic coma. It would be five long days before he would regain consciousness. When he did, it would take a lot of work to regain his strength and abilities...

Grateful Dead Live at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on December 15, 1986.

Touch Of Gray, CC Rider, When Push Comes To Shove, Beat It On Down The Line-> Greatest Story Ever Told, Loser, Cassidy, Althea, My Brother Esau, Candyman, Let It Grow Iko Iko, Looks Like Rain, Black Muddy River, Playin' In The Band-> Terrapin Station-> Drums-> Truckin'-> Wharf Rat-> Playin' In The Band-> Good Lovin', E: Johnny B. Goode

Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland, CA would play host to this historically relevant Dead event. The community was in a frenzy due to Jerry's return. Fittingly the show opened with "Touch of Grey" and continued through some slow but classic jams. Listen to the crowd as the band begins... The energy is overwhelmingly palpable. Highlights of the show came in the form of "Cassidy", "Althea", "Terrapin Station", "Truckin'" and "Wharf Rat".

The show wasn't the strongest and was slower than what most typically enjoy, but Jerry was alive. The band was moving forward and would continue for several more solid years before Jerry would once again depart. It was a chaotic time to be a Deadhead... But at least they had Jerry.

Comments

  1. Jerry was unconscious for five days, not five months...he was performing again after five months. I was at this run of shows and remember the emotions very clearly. It was said that Jerry had to re-learn how to play guitar, but I believe he was born knowing how to play...he likely has been a musician/entertainer in many lifetimes.
