I couldn’t think of a better way to start opening day at Mishawaka then by stopping by New Belgium Brewery for some amazing Americana from The Holler!. Lead by a true artist named of Michael Kirkpartrick, The Holler! wowed the beer-guzzling audience over the course of their two sets. They opened with Neil Young’s “Powderfinger.”

SET I: Powderfinger, Blue Jay, Moonshiner, Sittin’ On Top Of The World, Soul Mate, Lovin’ In My Baby’s Eyes, Pineview, Climb, Pisces Song, Hey Hey What Can I Do, Path, Women Are Smarter, Memory Like Mine, Karaloram

SET II: Wildwood, Beyond The Mirror, Yellow Moon, Ducks Back, Reply, Bird Song, Mind is Moving, Come Into My Kitchen, Yer So Bad, Peak, Gratitude

ENCORE: Mr. Spaceman

It was a fun day as people trickled in and out of the Liquid Center to catch the music. Billed as a graduation celebration and a Mother’s Day event it really did seem like a big party. Eventually the room filled and The Holler! kicked it into high gear. Highlights from the first set included smoking versions of Led Zeppelin’s “Hey Hey What Can I Do,” and Taj Mahal’s “Lovin’ In My Baby’s Eyes.” I also really enjoyed their original track "Blue Jay," which is a bouncy jaunt, literally told from a bird’s eye view. The Holler! is not afraid to take covers and actually make them their own. At times listening to songs I am very familiar with, seemed incredibly fresh and new. Their nascent drummer, Garrett Evans has come a very long way in a short period of time. He really has solidified their rhythm section in a big way. I was getting sucked in and before I knew it the first set was over and it was time to make my way up to Mishawaka Amphitheatre for opening night in the Poudre Canyon.
