Burning Man 8.30 - 9.4.16

Black Rock City Gerlach, NV Words By J. Picard Photos By J. Picard & Carly Picard Tuesday August 30 - Arrival in Black Rock City: Our convoy roared through the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation. There was still nothing but static coming through the radio. We made the turn towards Gerlach and in the distance we could see a dust storm, behind which lied the collective destination of about 70,000 travelers. Through the crackling came the sound of BMIR 94.5 FM Burning Man Information Radio. We had arrived after hours of driving and weeks of preparation. Our group pulled onto the Playa and passed down the flag-lined roads of quotes, stories and poetry towards the Black Rock City gates. The first set of greeters directed us towards the box office which had no wait. At the second checkpoint the staff, accompanied by a stuffed K-9, checked our vehicles for stowaways. From there we were sent on our final stretch to the city gates where we were welcomed by an excited team of Burners a

ALBUM REVIEW: The Nth Power 'Live To Be Free'

Image
Words By Kevin Hahn ( Split Open & Shoot Photography ) The Nth Power is a multi-genre playing, soul-preaching, funk machine that has exploded onto our beloved jamband scene with their truly unique combination of pure musical skill, a deep love/connection with their personal spiritualities, and a fan-base that is only getting more ravenous with each new release. Led by the formidable and downright nasty drumming of “The Evangelist” Nikki Glaspie, formerly of BeyoncĂ© and Dumpstaphunk, The Nth Power brings a youthful energy and undying joy to each and every live performance. Their latest live release Live To Be Free is a perfect example of how far this band has come in the last two years, and in my opinion leaves room for growth and improvement as well. Created in New Orleans and based out of Brooklyn, New York, The Nth Power has gone through a few different lineup variations while rising quickly to funk fame, most notably having powerhouse vocalist/organist Nigel Hall leave the

Cake 10.15.16

Image
The Boulder Theater Boulder, CO Words & Photos By Brad Yeakel ( Opti Mystic Outlooks ) A honky-tonk country western band stumbled into Beck's studio and found John McCrea spitting the counter-culture revival. That's how it began... or so I would have you believe. Actually, Cake has operated for well over 2 decades on a formula that is solid. Play good music and your fans will continue to support you. And it's that support that allows a band like Cake to exist. My Cake timeline: "The Distance" becomes a smash hit. I enjoy the tune, but am not immediately entranced by the band. Approximately 1996/7 a friend of mine's parents went out of town, and a co-ed high school party ensued. We drank, smoked pot, and did all the other teenage things. We hoped a girl would be naked or something like that. We weren't far off. Once the inhibitions were gone, my friend Aaron stripped off all of HIS clothes and jumped on the hosts "Nordic Track."

Phish 10.14.16

Image
North Charleston Coliseum North Charleston, SC Words By Dany Connor Photos By Bain Stewart Media A good city creates its own vibe that permeates through everything there. Charleston is not short on “vibes” in any sense. Five years to the day since their last visit, Phish came back with a vengeance. Being a tour opener the people were just excited to get to see the boys indoors again. The party in the lot set the tone with a perfect fall evening, complete with a glowing (almost) full moon. With a brand new album, Big Boat , that fans are still working through, Phish came out smoking. Emerging to a thunderous welcome from the crowd, the band immediately addressed the hurricane that made its way through the city just the week before. The Anastasio penned "Petrichor" reminded us that “the rain came down” over and over. This song is exciting because it takes the band back to their classical/prog rock roots. It was a huge statement, if only by the length of the song. Up ne

10 Bands Not To Miss at Hulaween 2016

Image
Words By Coleman Schwartz & Julie Hutchins Hulaween is a highlight of the festival season and as always, Suwanee is setting the bar high. This year’s “Stringer Things” theme is sure to incite spooky jams and mischievousness into the late night. After 2015’s surge of attendees, the festival made the decision to cap ticket sales off at 20,000 and expand the grounds. Suwanee added 2 new stages, The Meadow and The Patch, to accommodate the ridiculously surreal line up. With a bill that hosts 7 sets of String Cheese, 3 sets of Umphrey’s McGee, My Morning Jacket, and STS9 as main stage staples. As an excited festival attendee, it can be overwhelming to create a schedule that makes all the rounds. Go see your favorite headliners, but don’t forget to check out all of the awesome side stage action. We’ve compromised a list of some of our favorite acts you should not miss!
