Monday World Beat: Zakir Hussain

Words By Greg Molitor

To say that Zakir Hussain is a master of his craft would be a severe understatement. Considered by many to be the most prolific classical tabla player in the world, Hussain has been stunning audiences across the world since 1970 with his fluid, soulful playing and breakneck drumming tempos. His contributions throughout the years include: Shakti alongside the legendary John McLaughlin; Global Drum Project with Mickey Hart; The Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Zakir Hussain Trio; and Tabla Beat Science cofounded by bassist/producer Bill Laswell and himself.

Check out the links below and take a tour of Hussain’s many collaborations. Each group takes a its own unique approach to making music, but there is a noticeable fusion of Western and Indian styles that connects similar musical ideology to their music. We hope you enjoy!
