Jamband Spotlight: moe.

Words By Greg Molitor (ReMIND Photography & Journalism)

Welcome to MusicMarauder’s new Monday column, Jamband Spotlight! Every Monday, I’ll be highlighting different improvisational rock & roll acts from the past and present to showcase the many talents groups we love so dearly in our scene. Let’s get things going with our first selection, moe.!

Moe. established itself in the early 90’s as a improvisational powerhouse through relentless touring and dedication, and while it has never reached the same popularity seen with heavy hitters Widespread Panic, String Cheese Incident, or Phish, moe. has certainly left its mark on a vast amount of folks who passionately follow the band to the ends of the Earth. The proof is measurable as the band not only draws huge crowds wherever it tours, but also has been host to multiple festivals including moe.down, snoe.down, Summer Camp, and moe. cruise.

The band consists of five members: Rob Derhak (bass, vocals), Al Schnier (guitar, vocal, keyboard), Chuck Garvey (guitar, vocals), Vinnie Amico (drums), and Jim Loughlin (percussion). While each cannot be considered virtuoso at their particular instrument, every member plays with an incredible amount of soul and purpose. When combined, the result is a fiery melting pot of a raw, effects-laden hybrid monster. Unique as it is familiar, moe.’s ‘country funk’ rock and roll is powerfully constructed through patience and listening, and when the band is at its finest, it creates seamless transitions between moments of tension and blissful release.

MusicMarauders is offering three different shows from which to choose in order to highlight the band and its music. The first is a classic show from 05.06.2003. This particular show reveals the band’s ability to jam for ridiculously lengthy periods of time. The first set is moe.’s Wormwood album in its entirety, and the second, ninety-minute set is a whopper that contains only two songs! Even though the recording isn’t perfect, the content gives it worthy value.

The second and third shows are from 01.05.11 and 01.06.11. These performances, the first acoustic and second electric, show the band’s diversity and growth throughout their twenty-plus years of performing. We hope you all enjoy these selections as much as I do, and I look forward to presenting music in this fashion for many years to come! Enjoy!
