The Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics by David Dodd is a wonderful addition to any music lover’s book collection. Referencing nearly all of the allusions, metaphors, and imagery for the lyrics contained within its covers, the book will surely present fascinating insight to both new and longtime fans of The Dead. Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, who also wrote a foreword for the Lyrics, helped Dodd with the annotations during the ten-year project that spanned from January 1995 to the book’s release in October 2005. 512 pages in length, the book covers lyrics from the entire Dead catalog beginning with The Grateful Dead and ending with Built to Last.

The Annotated Lyrics can be found in two forms each with their own advantages. The first option is to purchase a hard copy of the Annotated Lyrics either online or at most major book stores. With the hard copy, one can take the Lyrics on car rides, flights, or any other trip that during, one might enjoy some light reading. Also, the foreword by Hunter is well worth the purchase of the copy. If an individual is light on cash but still would like to access the Annotations, there is a website with the Lyrics that contains awesome additional input from fans and scholars who share their own interpretations of how the lyrical meanings may have be derived. This book absolutely changed my life for it answered many questions that I had regarding the figurative language used by The Grateful Dead lyricists, and it is an treasure that any serious Deadhead needs to own. Happy reading!
