Attention grasshoppers...there’s a new master of martial arts coming to your town. No, I’m not talking about the traveling Chuck Norris bowflex demonstrations. As amazing as that sounds, you should really be checking out Kung Fu, Connecticut's new funk / jazz outfit. Featuring an all-star cast of the area’s finest musicians, Kung Fu has been crushing since late 2009 and has proven itself to be a serious force on the American jam scene...

This dangerous supergroup that formed out of a Monday night jam session is comprised of The Breakfast’s Tim Palmieri (guitar) and Adrian Tramantono (drums), Raq’s Todd Stoops (keys), Jazz is Dead’s Dave Livolsi (bass), and Deep Banana Blackout’s Rob Somerville (sax). Fusing rock, jazz, and funk, Kung Fu gives a nod to Herbie Hancock, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Weather Report as its inspiration to destroy us all, and by all indications, the band rolls with enough karate chops to get the job done. All summer long, Kung Fu will be making appearances at music festivals such as The Big Up, Mountain Jam, Some Kind of Jam, and Gathering of the Vibes as well as multiple gigs up and down the east coast. Go check these guys out, but be prepared...if you don’t start training now, they’re bound to make quick work of you...you best get familiar with Kung Fu!

Buckethead: Gimmick or Guitar God?

Words & Photos By Nicholas Stock ( phatphlogblog.blogspot.com ) At what point does the gimmick overshadow the performance? The obvious answer is Buckethead. The man is an amazing guitarist but something is not right in this world. The idea a performer who dons a KFC chicken bucket on his head for a concert has always intrigued me, and some of his side projects such as Colonel Claypool’s Bernie Bucket of Brains have been huge successes. However his performance last weekend in Fort Collins simply left me perplexed. From his robotic dancing, to his nunchuck display, to the fact the he performed with an iPod rather than a band all added to my confusion. Going into the show I was ready to be blown away, despite rumblings of disgruntled fans from the previous night’s show at The Gothic. Buckethead had had some sound issues and some missed cues in Denver but I was still trying to be positive for the show in Fort Collins. Scott Shrader Photography When asked to write a review of last week's Billy Strings show at Asheville, North Carolina's Salvage Station I almost passed on it. I just wrote a review of his last Asheville show a few months ago and I thought it may be hard to come up with another set of words to describe to the readers exactly what a Billy Strings show is all about. I am sure there are a plethora of other reviews that other people have written focusing on how well he has mastered his instrument. I suppose I could recycle those thoughts and just sit here typing out a few adjectives describing each note Billy and his superb backing band played this past Thursday night, but that wouldn't be fun for me. Additionally I'd imagine a review like that wouldn't keep your attention either. Instead I have decided to focus on a few random parts of the Billy Strings show that seemed interesting to me. One: B

I’m old. I’m one of those gray-haired heads still searching and trying to keep abreast of the next wave of musical whatnots and masterful wingdings. It wasn’t that long ago that I was asking musicians outright if Jam was dead . Since the emergence of Twiddle the world of Jam has seen an influx of young progressive rockers from bands like Spafford, Aqueous, Mungion, and more. Beyond that, this new crop of fans seems wholly uninterested in the jam that came before.
