Wednesday World Beat: Eek-A-Mouse

Words By J-man

Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Culture, Burning Spear, Israel Vibration and Eek-A-Mouse? "Who was the last one?" you may be asking yourself. Kingston, Jamaica's very own Eek-A-Mouse may be lesser know than some of the other roots reggae stars, but what he lacked in name recognition he made up for in style and innovation. Nobody was doing what Eek-A-Mouse was doing before he came along. The unique blend of what sounded like sound effects and Hacidic chant became the staple of Eek-A-Mouse's arsenal.

Some may argue that it overtook his music and became overused, but initially it took the Jamaican scene by storm. Hits like "Ganja Smuggling" and "Wa Do Dem" earned him high praise in the years following Bob Marley's death. As quickly as he came, he disappeared back in anonymity.

Do yourself a favor and give him a listen...
