It has been decided, Garrett Sayers is my favorite bass player. This past Wednesday, much like every other Wednesday we found the Garrett Sayers Trio, comprised of Garrett Sayers (Bass), Patrick Lee(Keys), Jonny Jyemo (Drums) at the Highland Tap & Burger in Denver's Lower Highlands (LoHi). The bar was basically two rooms. In one room, the bar. In the other we found a local running club wrapping up it's happy hour drinks and meals. Towards the front of the room, with a view of the street was a small area cleared out for the trio. Immediately we recognized many familiar faces.

Garrett came by our table and said hello. It was clear that he was excited to play and energized by the opportunity to showcase his band. The crowd was receptive and the trio commanded the attention of the previously chatty room. Their clear directional and organized progressions resolved to captivating solos. As I watched Garrett play, I was overtaken with emotion and focus. When I came back to reality, I realized the I had one hand on the top of my head, scratching with amazement and the other covering my mouth and attempting to hold up my jaw.

All of this was free. There was no cover at the door. The Highland Tap is basically a restaurant that happens to have music, as opposed to being a venue that happens to serve food. What we got in exchange for our free admission was an invaluable night of covers and original material that set the scene for some good times. Buckethead: Gimmick or Guitar God?

Words & Photos By Nicholas Stock ( phatphlogblog.blogspot.com ) At what point does the gimmick overshadow the performance? The obvious answer is Buckethead. The man is an amazing guitarist but something is not right in this world. The idea a performer who dons a KFC chicken bucket on his head for a concert has always intrigued me, and some of his side projects such as Colonel Claypool’s Bernie Bucket of Brains have been huge successes. However his performance last weekend in Fort Collins simply left me perplexed. From his robotic dancing, to his nunchuck display, to the fact the he performed with an iPod rather than a band all added to my confusion. Going into the show I was ready to be blown away, despite rumblings of disgruntled fans from the previous night’s show at The Gothic. Buckethead had had some sound issues and some missed cues in Denver but I was still trying to be positive for the show in Fort Collins. I’m old. I’m one of those gray-haired heads still searching and trying to keep abreast of the next wave of musical whatnots and masterful wingdings. It wasn’t that long ago that I was asking musicians outright if Jam was dead . Since the emergence of Twiddle the world of Jam has seen an influx of young progressive rockers from bands like Spafford, Aqueous, Mungion, and more. Beyond that, this new crop of fans seems wholly uninterested in the jam that came before. Scott Shrader Photography When asked to write a review of last week's Billy Strings show at Asheville, North Carolina's Salvage Station I almost passed on it. I just wrote a review of his last Asheville show a few months ago and I thought it may be hard to come up with another set of words to describe to the readers exactly what a Billy Strings show is all about. I am sure there are a plethora of other reviews that other people have written focusing on how well he has mastered his instrument. I suppose I could recycle those thoughts and just sit here typing out a few adjectives describing each note Billy and his superb backing band played this past Thursday night, but that wouldn't be fun for me. Additionally I'd imagine a review like that wouldn't keep your attention either. Instead I have decided to focus on a few random parts of the Billy Strings show that seemed interesting to me. One: B
