My expectations were low and competition was excessive on the high holiday of Saturday April 20th in Denver, CO. Civic Center Park was packed during the day with thousands of folks celebrating the first 4.20 since Colorado's marijuana legalization had taken place. Just a couple of blocks up, Sancho's played host to a free "festival" featuring a handful of local bands, the evening's Red Rocks show feat. Slightly Stoopid and Cypress Hill was sold out, The Motet and Ozomatli would pack the Fillmore and The Cannabis Cup was playing host to several parties, after parties and smokeouts. That night, we found ourselves all the way down Broadway in Englewood at The Gothic Theater for New Elastic Time feat. Michael Kang, Jamie Shields, Michael Travis & Jason Hann. After an extended drive and limited options for parking, we found ourselves inside of the half filled venue.

Layers of electronic music coupled with decent instrumentation for a directionless assault on the accepting crowd. Much like an EOTO show, Travis and Jason created the base layer as a vehicle for additions, Kang and Shields, to improvise over. The most interesting and cohesive aspect of what they were outputting came from Kang's side of the stage where he leaned into his solos and dug the band out of nonsensical and uninteresting electronic work. It didn't take long before our group started giving each other sideways looks. No more than an hour into the show, we realized the we had made a mistake in choosing to attend this show, which the musicians themselves had hardly taken seriously. To just hop up on stage and hope for the best sounds decent in theory, but translated like a train wreck. Then the suggestion came for some late night grub and we were on our way to the Denver Diner...
